Summary
In this nature communications paper from Trinity College Dublin, researchers demonstrate a novel method to deconvolute the in-plane and out-of-plane electrochemical properties of MXenes, a promising material for energy storage applications. Using scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) on Park’s NX10, they were able to pinpoint the electrochemical response of transition metal carbide Mxenes at length scales of 300 nm2, and in doing so uncovered evidence for rapid proton migration across MXene interfaces.
This work reframes the understanding of pseudocapacitance in MXenes, emphasizing surface proton dynamics as dominant, and paving the way for faster, leaner, and more controllable energy storage devices.
