Summary
In this nature communications paper, researchers reveal insights into the manipulation of topological polar textures in ferroelectric materials through external stimuli like electric fields. This approach opens new possibilities for advanced nanoelectronics applications such as ultrahigh-density data storage. The team at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin reports the realization of epitaxial BaTiO3 nanoislands on silicon, with a lateral size as small as 30-60 nm, and demonstrate stable center down-convergent polarization domains that can be reversibly switched by an electric field to center up-divergent domains.
Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) data reconstruction and phase field modeling were used to acquire information about the 3D domain patterns. PFM images were taken by the Park NX10 AFM.
